OFSAA Update (Day 2)
Posted by Mooch in the forum:
“Zack Brady placed 2nd becoming the 1st Drury wrestler to ever medal at OFSAA in his 1st 2 years of high school. Smillie, Michaelis, Nicholson and Ponton top 12. Ponton became the 1st Drury wrestler to win 2 protests at OFSAA. Won the 1st re-wrestle, lost the 2nd on an out-of-bounds with 3 seconds left. It may not have been the type of OFSAA's we have become accustomed to but still a pretty good showing for a fairly, young and inexperienced squad. Well done guys.”

OFSAA Update (Day 1)
Posted by Mooch in the forum:
“I'm retired. Why do I still have to do the updates????
Nevertheless, after a bit of a slow start, things picked up in the afternoon with some gutsy victories. Of 8 wrestlers, we have 4 1/2 left. Zack Brady is in the semi's tomorrow against the Brebeuf guy he beat at GHAC. Now in the top 8 and 1 win away from the top 6 are Reed Nicholson, Kierran Smillie and Max Michaelis. The 1/2 is James Ponton who lost his last match at the end of the day but we protested and won the protest. By time they made the ruling the other guy had left not knowing about the protest. We suspect they will wrestle a deciding round in the morning. Arie Moldvan and Zach Vandervelde were both 1-2. Rookie Jarret Steptoe went winless but did not embaress himself and gained great experience for the future.”

Nine wrestlers advance to OFSAA meet
Nine local wrestlers have qualified to represent the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) at next month’s provincial high school championships.
Wrestlers qualified for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) meet by finishing in the top two of their weight categories at last week’s GHAC championships in Georgetown.
Six Oakville wrestlers won their weight categories at the GHAC competition. Abbey Park’s Matt Sheen (47.5 kilogram) and Vlad Kluev (89 kilogram), Holy Trinity’s Zach Falcioni (54 kilogram), Frank Simone (77 kilogram) and Stefan Birtch (83 kilogram), and White Oaks’ Tyler Medeiros (heavyweight division) all finished first in boys’ divisions.
Second-place finishers in boys’ competition were King’s Christian Collegiate’s Selo DiBlasio (67.5 kilogram) and Eric Ohi (77 kilogram), while White Oaks’ Kimi De Bruyn was second in the girls’ 47.5 kilogram division.
Other local wrestlers to crack the top six in their weight categories included King’s Christian’s Daniel Salley, Jabari Hamilton, Natasha Reynolds and Alec MacMillan, White Oaks’ Nathan Black, Daniel Alhaj, Nathan Benton and Caroline Fell, Trinity’s Melvin Bolanos-Cordero, Mike Cleeg and Chris Cipolla, Abbey Park’s Nick Lemieux and Adam Redding, and Loyola’s Matt Norris.
Holy Trinity finished fourth in the boys’ team standings with 48 points. Milton’s E.C. Drury won the boys’ title with 114 points.
The OFSAA wrestling championships are scheduled for March 2-5 in Sudbury.

Rebuilding E.C. Drury wrestling team handily wins 25th Halton title; hosts GHAC Thursday
No experience, no problem.
E.C. Drury's wrestling team is in the midst of one of its bigger rebuilding stages in recent memory. But you'd hardly know that based on Friday's Halton championship results.
Despite having just one wrestler with more than three years experience - and a host of rookies and sophomores - the Spartans handily won its 25th regional title at Georgetown High School. On the strength of five gold medals and 29 top-six finishers, Drury came away with 141 points, double that of runner-up Holy Trinity.
Winning Haltons for the perennial powerhouse squad were Kierran Smillie (38-kg), Zach Vandervelde (44-kg), Danny Stomphorst (61-kg), Stefan Djolovic (89-kg) and Jarrett Steptoe.
Jose Rambherose, Ryan Patterson, Colin Fraser, Armaan Neemachwala and Tyler Reis-Sanford claimed silver, while securing bronze were Max Michaelis, Reed Nicholson, James Ponton, Ben Bianco, Nick McCallum and Cody Franke.Drury hosts GHAC Thursday, with top-two finishers there advancing to OFSAA, which is set for March 2 to 5 in Sudbury.

Spartans win annual invitational
Another pre-holiday wrestling tournament, another dominating performance for E.C. Drury.
On the strength of 11 medal-winning efforts, the host Spartans handily won their invitational meet Wednesday. They beat runner-up Meadowvale by a decisive 32 points and earned their 23rd team title in 24 years.
Devon Whyte and Zack Brady — who secured silver at OFSAA as a rookie last season — each went 4-0 and earned pin-fall victories in all of their matches to claim 77 and 41-kilogram gold respectively. Buddy DeWilde also won four straight bouts to reach the top of the 72-kg. podium, while going 2-0 to top the 54-kg. ranks was Luke Campbell.
Bill Doddington (64kg), James Ponton (54) and Arie Moldvan (51) all claimed silver, while coming away with bronze were Ben Bianco (64), Max Michaelis (67.5) and Zach Vandervelde (47).
Eleven other Spartans enjoyed top-five finishes to round out the perennial powerhouse team’s overall victory.
