E.C. Drury's wrestling team is in the midst of one of its bigger rebuilding stages in recent memory. But you'd hardly know that based on Friday's Halton championship results.
Despite having just one wrestler with more than three years experience - and a host of rookies and sophomores - the Spartans handily won its 25th regional title at Georgetown High School. On the strength of five gold medals and 29 top-six finishers, Drury came away with 141 points, double that of runner-up Holy Trinity.
Winning Haltons for the perennial powerhouse squad were Kierran
Smillie (38-kg), Zach Vandervelde (44-kg), Danny Stomphorst
(61-kg), Stefan Djolovic (89-kg) and Jarrett Steptoe.
Jose Rambherose, Ryan Patterson, Colin Fraser, Armaan Neemachwala
and Tyler Reis-Sanford claimed silver, while securing bronze were
Max Michaelis, Reed Nicholson, James Ponton, Ben Bianco, Nick
McCallum and Cody Franke.
Drury hosts GHAC Thursday, with top-two finishers there advancing to OFSAA, which is set for March 2 to 5 in Sudbury.
