Spartans win annual invitational

On the strength of 11 medal-winning efforts, the host Spartans handily won their invitational meet Wednesday. They beat runner-up Meadowvale by a decisive 32 points and earned their 23rd team title in 24 years.
Devon Whyte and Zack Brady — who secured silver at OFSAA as a rookie last season — each went 4-0 and earned pin-fall victories in all of their matches to claim 77 and 41-kilogram gold respectively. Buddy DeWilde also won four straight bouts to reach the top of the 72-kg. podium, while going 2-0 to top the 54-kg. ranks was Luke Campbell.
Bill Doddington (64kg), James Ponton (54) and Arie Moldvan (51) all claimed silver, while coming away with bronze were Ben Bianco (64), Max Michaelis (67.5) and Zach Vandervelde (47).
Eleven other Spartans enjoyed top-five finishes to round out the perennial powerhouse team’s overall victory.
